Imagine hearing a gentle sonic “thump” instead of a loud boom as a plane breaks the sound barrier. NASA is developing the X-59, an experimental aircraft designed to exceed the speed of sound while minimizing noise impact on communities below. As part of the QUESST (Quiet Supersonic Technology) mission, NASA plans to conduct community flyovers to assess public perception of this quieter supersonic flight.
To support this initiative, the Wisconsin Space Grant Consortium, the Center for Space Research, Geneva Lake Astrophysics and STEAM, and The Everett Group are collaborating to develop STEM-focused community engagement programs. These programs aim to ascertain what individuals hear during the QUESST flyovers and gather feedback on the experience. If selected by NASA, these initiatives will be implemented in flyover communities beginning in 2025.
Wisconsin Space Grant Consortium announces the 34th Annual Wisconsin Space Conference Poster Award winners: Timothy Day and Ellyssa Purdy.
